We spent this past December reflecting on 2018, and then got together with some girlfriends to set our own intentions for the new year. If you can’t make it, here’s an easy take on what we did.
First of all….what does it mean to set intentions? Instead of listing new year resolutions of things we will try to do, we like to think of it as guiding our thoughts, which then guide our actions to live out who we want to be. It’s all about taking the time to plant that seed in our conscious and have a sense of purpose after the intention is set.
Grab a pen and notebook or your computer and find a quiet time and space to sit with your thoughts.
REFLECT ON THE PAST YEAR
A good way to figure out what your intention(s) will be is to think about how this past year went. What were the wins? What lessons were learned? What areas in your life are flourishing and what areas could you see more fulfillment in?
IDENTIFY YOUR INTENTION(S) FOR THE NEW YEAR
After reflecting on the past year, what areas of your life, values, passions, priorities are most important and which do you want to see grow? What do you want your life in 2019 to look like?
If it’s more simple to have only one overarching intention for the year, see if there’s a common theme showing up to fulfill and grow every aspect of your life. Is it easier to sum up an intention in one meaningful word? Jot it down when you’ve figured it out.
SET THE INTENTION(S)
Those first two parts can even be done ahead of time if you want to break it up. Then, find another quiet time to actually set the intention forth. You may want to continue to write for this part, just look at your intention written out, lay down or sit in a chair. Do what feels good to you! For us, we sit in a cross-legged position on the floor, close our eyes, and set it in meditation.
Take a few breaths in and out of your nose to put yourself into a relaxed state.
Then think about your intention. State it to yourself and thus the universe.
Think about what it looks and feels like to live out your intention daily, in the next few months, and over the course of the year. Take some long, full breaths, allowing those visions and feelings to come through.
When you come back to awareness, thank yourself for making the time to set your intention(s).
Write down anything that came through or spend some extra time to process everything your head.
